Up to 7th in line of succession to the throne, approval from the emperor or crown prince is required at the time of marriage. When a female member of the Imperial family marries, she is excluded from the Imperial family and given a peerage along with her husband to become a member of the royal aristocracy. In marriages between male members of the Imperial family, spouses are given honorific names of their wives and princes in the peerage.When a spouse divorces, a new peerage is granted while retaining the honorific title.
