The Renoan Empire (also known as the New Reno) is a micronation located in Portland, Vancouver (Washington), Klamath Falls, Boise, Salt Lake City, San Francisco Bay Area, Fresno, Phoenix, Huntington Beach, Sacramento and surrounding Sierra Nevada foothills, Milwaukee, Southern Indiana, Syracuse, and Toronto. Formerly a socialist republic under Shaoshan, Sonora and Cascadia and briefly as a failed federal Parliamentary republic, it is and has largely been governed as a monarchy with the Empress exercising many rights of head of State but accountable to the government. The Matriarch is the Head of the Renoan Royal Family, the House Percy-Smith. The Matriarch exercises no legal or political authority but is considered to be the spiritual leader of the state, tantamount to that of a respected elder. The legislative body is the þing, which holds a prestigious and traditional role as the nation's diet, though largely this is ceremonial. The head of government is the Prime Minister who presides over the þing.

It was founded as a state of Shaoshan in 2015. On December 4, 2016, Shaoshan dissolved and New Reno became an integral part of the new state, Sonora. Despite rule from the socialist regime in Sonora, New Reno remained defiant as a dominant party state under the rule of the conservative, nationalist, and christian democratic National Party. In response, Sonora granted New Reno special administrative status, giving it greater autonomy. New Reno abolished the Earldom in favor of a constitutional republic. The Earldom retruned during the Winter of 2017-2018 but was reconstituted in February 2018. New Reno has fallen in and out of monarchism and republicanism, gaining its independence after the fall of socialism in Cascadia and the collapse of the Cascadian nation-state.

History

New Reno started as a town governed by its sole citizen and Governor, Ceres Smith, the great grandmother of Titania Smith. It was one of the most loyalist pockets to her regime and continued to hold the most prominence among other towns. It was upgraded to City status in November 2016 with the addition of two new citizens. On December 4, 2016, Shaoshan dissolved and the Marxian Premier reorganized the alliance into a empire, with agreement from the other two powers. Under the empire, the City of New Reno became a vassal state with semi-autonomy with the Sonoran monarch Earl and the Chief Minister as chief executive and head of the Renoan Senate. Following Sonora's socialist revolution, New Reno gained more autonomy as a special administrative region. It has since remained a self-governing entity. In March 2018, New Reno was granted the ability to retain its Special Administrative status while also being allowed to run a representative for the Sonoran National Assembly. For most of the rest of 2018, New Reno exercised a level of varying autonomy and bouts of independence, even engaging in aid to the rebels in the Sonoran Civil War. New Reno joined the Sonoran Confederation in November 2018 but when the Confederation collapsed, it de facto regained independence. In June 2019, it joined the Republic of Cascadia, formalizing its incorporation into its union. In October 2019, the Christian Democrats and Nationals, having united briefly as the Freedom Party, left with a handful remaining. The full former citizenry returned by January 2020. Since then, New Reno has been the center of Cacsadian political turmoil as it continuously toted the line between the socialist regime of Titania Smith and monarchism, touted by conservatives. In September 2021, following the collapse of the Smith regime, New Reno was the epicenter of monarchist sentiment, culminating in the re-establsihment of the Renoan monarchy.

In July 2022, after the overturning of Roe v Wade in the neighboring United States by the Supreme Court, anger and resentment fostered a growing sense for a people's democracy. Led by the former Empress, Titania Smith, herself a Marxist-Leninist, abolished the Monarchy and established a "federal people's democratic republic". This quickly fell into inactivity when Smith withdrew from micronational politics due to burnout and depression and that September, the monarchy was reinstated with Juno as Queen and Titania Smith as her appointed Prime Minister. Smith served for over a year before refusing to run for reelection. She was replaced by Josh Graceson. Subsequently, Smith would succeed her sister Juno as then-Queen, now Empress in November 2023 when Juno agreed to temporarily abdicate until her 13th birthday while she focuses on her studies.

Government and politics

New Reno (or the Renoan Empire) is governed as a de facto absolute monarchy, though it is currently de jure a parliamentary monarchy with the Empress still holding paramount executive power. The Prime Minister, is head of government and leader of the þing ("thing"), the de facto quarterly held assembly, who is responsible for breaking up disputes and deadlock. Though the þing has legislative power, it currently is more of a courtesy as it only meets every few months and is largely a judicial body for challenging Imperial Decrees by the Empress and resolving civil disputes. Furthermore, the Empress can still reject any bill passed by the body (ie Royal Ascent). The Prime Minister exercises the powers of a head of government but is largely a advisory official. The Empress holds the power of Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Defense Force within the nation but the power to declare war, however, rests with the þing. Legislative approval for combat longer than 21 days is still required. The Prime Minister is elected every three months. The Imperial Defense Force provides national and civil defense. The Renoan Senate is a representative body gathering through the form of parliamentary democracy to make policy and direct and progress the state.

Territories

The Renoan Empire claims several lands in western North America and the Great Lakes, with 4 bioregional palatinates, divided into duchies, earldoms, and counties. Lands without a direct ruler are crown colonies, direct possessions of the Empress. The Empress also claims the throne of several current and defunct monarchies (including Germany, Austria, and the Scandinavian countries), though she does not directly control the lands of which they once controlled.
