For the majority of the political history of the Arstotzkan Union, there has been many Political Parties in the Arstotzkan Union however the nation has also been a single-party state for a lot of its history. From 2019 the Arstotzkan Union had a period of single party politics under the People's Party until 2020 when new parties were formed in the National Government, leading to the first general election and the first multi-party system.

Since the beginning of the Arstotzkan Union, there have been five different parties.

History

On 22 August 2019, the Arstotzkan Union was formed and the first political party, the Arstotzkan People's Party was created. The People's Party initially had a policy of anti-immigration, national sovereignty and supremacy and democratic communism. This became a very contentious issue in the Arstotzkan Union National Government, with pacifists factions and anti-union groups beginning to form. This led to the Arstotzkan Wars in September 2019.

Between the First and Second Civil Conflicts, Anti-Unionists in the National Assembly formed the Democratic Labour Party of Arstotzka. This new party opposed the rule of the People's Party and brought back individuals who instigated the First Civil Conflict and began the Second Civil Conflict. The DLPA was eventually banned in mid-2020.

Following the end of the Arstotzkan Wars in February 2020, calls for an opening in the political system to allow new parties to oppose the dictatorial rule of the Arstotzkan Union's incumbent President, Ethan Brinkman. President Ethan allowed this after the formation of the Arstotzkan Union's third ever political party, the Arstotzkan Labour Party. The then-leader of the Arstotzkan Labour Party, Brooklyn Le-Comte petitioned to the National Assembly to hold a Presidential Election. The National Assembly approved the idea and a President Election would occur on 1 September 2020, however this was changed to 1 May 2020 as it was too close to the 2020 New Zealand General Election.

On 20 March 2020, Peter Gedye, who had served as the 2nd Vice President and was a member of the Arstotzkan People's Party announced he would form two new parties for the upcoming election. Seeing that Peter was a more favourable candidate, Ethan Brinkman announced that he would form a coalition with Peter. Three days later Peter agreed and the United Government Alliance, a coalition of the Arstotzkan People's Party, Communist League of the Arstotzkan Union and Pirate Party of the Arstotzkan Union. Ethan promised Peter that if the party was elected then he would also become President and the two would implement a joint-Presidency.

On 1 May 2020 the United Government Alliance won the Presidential Election in a landslide and beat the Arstotzkan Labour Party, winning 71.4% of the votes. Ethan Brinkman and Peter Gedye formed the first joint-presidential administration on 2 May 2020. Ten days later, Zion Ormsby who had taken over from Brooklyn Le-Comte as the leader of the Arstotzkan Labour Party had requested to join the United Government Alliance and bring the ALP with him. Ethan Brinkman agreed and the United Government Alliance became the Second Democratic People's Party of the Arstotzkan Union. The Arstotzkan Union returned to a period of being a single-party state once more.

In February 2022, Ethan Brinkman and Alex Rose, agreed to form a new party to "improve democracy in the Union" with the Arstotzkan Conservative Alliance Party being formed.
