Gretigo, officially the Republic of Gretigo, (IPA: /ˌɡrɛtˈiɡˈoʊ/ (About this sound (listen)) (Spanish: República de Grétigo; Latin: Reipublicae Gretigo; Toki Pona: ⴲ ஃ › ⴲ ⟮ k w » t ◠ ı̥⟯‎; Toki Pona Latin alphabet: ma kulupu li ma kwetiko) is a micronation in the British Isles established on 7 November 2023. It is located on the northeast coast of East Anglia, a geographical region of Great Britain, bordered by the United Kingdom and the North Sea. Its land claim has an area of 996 km2 (373 sq mi) with approximately 104.5 thousand residents as of the 2018 census. The capital and largest city is Fakenham.

The Gretigan population is compossed mostly of English people, with the majority adhering to Christianity despite the official religion of Gretigo being Satanism. Gretigo is a member state of the organisations of the International Worldwide Alliance of Micronations (IWAM), the Satanic Temple of Micronations (SToM), and the Pact of Socialist Parties and Nations (PSPN).

Etymology

The "gret" in the name "Gretigo" is derived from the English word "Great" and the "igo" in the name translates to the phrase "go up" in Basque, the language spoken in Basque Country, a semi-autonomous region in northern Spain and south-eastern France.

History

Pre-Gretigo

Ancient Times

The current territory of Gretigo has had inhabitants since ancient times. Based on the data at their disposal, specialists estimate that the land has inhabited societies since approximately 300,000 years ago, with the first found inhabitant around 500,000 years ago.[1] Starting from approximately 1000BCE, the Celts had rule over the land where Gretigo lies before the Roman invasion in 43CE, which ended in 87CE.

Medieval Period

In 449CE, The Angle Tribe from Anglen in modern day Germany and Denmark, inhabited the area starting the era known as the medieval period. In 1066, the Normans invaded modern-day Gretigo in the Battle of Hastings, switching ownership from King Harrold Godwinson of England to Duke William II of Normandy, making him King William I of England. In 1153, King Harry II became the king, bringing power to the French House of Plantagenet (A.K.A. Anjou).

The Republic of Gretigo, was Founded by the first president of Gretigo, under the name of the Kingdom of Salarili on 7 November 2023 with a vastly different flag to the current one. On the same day, the constitution was ratified. On 11 November 2023, the name was changed to the Republic of Gretigo and the flag was changed to the current one. On 17 November 2023, the official government website and the YouTube channel was created.

MAO War of 2023

On 18 December 2023, Gretigo joined the Micronation Alliance Organisation (MAO) and not too long after joining, a declaration of war against Gretigo was signed by the leader of the micronation known at the time as the Communist Republic of Damoniah and currently as the Damonian Soviet Socialist Republics (the head and founder of MAO) started because of a major misunderstanding due to misinformation from a citizen of Gretigo. After the war started, Gretigo was forcefully removed from MAO. The war ended on the next day after a peace treaty was signed by both parties, resulting in a peaceful end to the war.

After the war ended, Gretigo rejoined MAO. Then, on 23 December 2023, the leader of The Union of Almendria allegedly manipulated the Gretigan president into attacking MAO and joining the United Socialist Republics (USR). The relations with the union were very short lived however as mere hours later, Gretigo left the USR and tried to rejoin MAO, however they discovered that MAO had been fully destroyed after the attack so UKIN, a former MAO member, came up with the idea for Gretigo to reform MAO. Shortly after the revival, the original founder of MAO, the Leader of Damoniah, got outraged at Gretigo’s recreation as he was the original founder of MAO and he thought that he should continue to lead it. After that encounter, the recreated version of MAO got renamed to the Worldwide Alliance of Micronations (WAM) and MAO returned with its original ownership. Two days later, Gretigo stopped development in WAM and rejoined MAO with its original ownership. Then, on 30 December 2023, Gretigo redesigned their coat of arms from the previous coat of arms, which was quite simple, to the current, more detailed one.

Communist conflict

On 3 Janurary 2024, communism started to rise in MAO, with two members (Damoniah and Bruhland) becoming communist and renaming to Blaycia and Alstiz. Then, because of the growing communist values in the organisation, the President of Gretigo created a petition to remove the communism from MAO and its commmunist members, which outraged Blaycia's Premier and caused him to remove Gretigo from the organisation. After the unexpected removal, the Republic of Gretigo created their own organisation, known as the Global Autocratic Treaty Organisation (GATO) and a brief war started between the organisations. On 7 January 2024, Gretigo gained control over the village of Twyford in England, which includes the Holy Twyfordian Empire, and creating the colony of Gretigan Twyford. Then, the war between Gretigo and MAO ended on 8 January 2024 with both parties agreeing to cooperate peacefully for the foreseeable future. Because of the new found peace, Gretigo left GATO and granted it new leadership before rejoining MAO.

On 29 January 2024, The President of Gretigo founded the Micronational Intelligence and Cybersecurity Fund (MICF), a now inactive organisation dedicated to helping its members with online attacks and war. The very next day, Gretigo passed a law banning tobacco, alcohol, and many harmful narcotics along with unrecognising and condemning the Peoples Democratic Republic of Korea. A few weeks later, on 14 February 2024, Gretigo founded the Satanic Temple of Micronations (SToM) to bring together micronations that follow satanism. On 14 March 2024, a rather controversial change to Gretigo occurred, with their land claim changing drastically from the previous ~3 kilometres squared land-area to a ~950 kilometre squared claim.

Politics and government

The Republic of Gretigo is a benelovent dictatorship and de jure constitutional republic, under martial law, essentially granting absolute authority to the ruler, meaning that the ruler is the head of state and head of governemnt. The government of Gretigo makes certain decisions with a semi-democratic system by running referendums that is voted on by the House of Senators. On 5 April 2024, the emblem representing Gretigo was changed from the previous coat of arms to the Unity Emblem which is featured on the flag.

The House of Senators is the legislature of Gretigo and the main branch of the Gretigan government. It currently consists of seven senators:

The senators vote in national referendums for issues and possible changes in Gretigo.

Geography

The Republic of Gretigo is located in north-eastern East Anglia, bordering the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland with a 44 mile long coastline next to the North Sea.

Gretigo experiences a temperate climate according to the Köppen climate classification. The summers are typically warm rather than hot and the winters are typically cool rather than cold.

According to estimates by the Office for National Statistics, the population of the area that now holds Gretigo in 2018 was 104,552, split almost evenly between males and females.

The country is covered by BBC East and ITV Anglia which are both broadcast from the foreign city of Norwich in the United Kingdom. Television signals are received from the Tacolneston TV transmitter in the United Kingdom.[2]

National symbols

The flag of the Republic of Gretigo consists of two vibrant-blue stripes (HEX code: #002EFF), one on the far left and one on the far right. Between the two vibrant-blue stripes, there is one dark-blue stripe (HEX code: #0700B7), Overlaying the blue background is a black and white symbol called the Unity Emblem, consisting of a black triangle with a white outline and a white circle in the middle of the symbol.

The vibrant-blue stripes represent resilience and strength, the dark-blue stripe represents prosperity. The black triangle in the Unity Emblem represents unity, the white outline around it represents peace, and the white circle in the middle represents the earth.

Currency

The currency of the Republic of Gretigo is the Gretigan quark (Ø), with the currency code of GTQ. The exchange rate of the Gretigan quark is $6.17 per Ø1.
