The Republic of Rathlin Island, more commonly known as Rathlin Island, is a micronation in Europe. It was founded in 2022 and has a population of 150. Its capital, largest and most populous city is Church Bay, which is the main port town of the country
Etymology
The origin of the name Rathlin is unknown. It was thought to be given the name in early days of civilization. Early uses of the name include "Reginia" or "Rhicina".
History
The island was formed through volcanic activity in prehistoric times. The volcano is no longer active.
Famously, in 1306 the island was home to Robert I, or Robert the Bruce, of Scotland as he sought refuge there.
Geography and climate
Due to its northernly location, Rathlin Island is prone to cold and windy weather. Snow and rain is common. In summer time, it can reach mild to warm temperatures. It's weather is similar to that of the northern areas of the island of Ireland.
Culture and media
Rathlin Island has a strong Irish culture. The Irish language speaking community. Scottish culture is common on the island, some even want the island to unite with an independent Scotland. Kelp is a popular local dish, as it washes up on the shores often.
