Transnistria (Russian: Приднестровье), officially the Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic (Russian: Приднестровская Советская Социалистическая Республика), or colloquially the TSSR (Russian: ТССР) is an unrecognized micronational entity that exists as a local government of the Union of Allied Soviet Republics within Southern Transnistria. The TSSR holds its capital at the city of South Tiraspol, and claims over 100,000 citizens as of the 2022 census. It has no recognition from the United Nations, and its territorial status is disputed.

Etymology

The phrase "Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic" hearkens back to the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, a communist client state of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics that existed from 1990 until the collapse of the Soviet Union and Moldova's independence in 1991. The phrase "Transnistria" itself is derived from a Moldavian/Romanian phrase, literally translating to "beyond the Dniester," in reference to the Dniester River. The phrase has its first documented use around 1924 in Romania.

History

The TSSR declared independence from the Pridnestrovian Moldovan Republic (Transnistria) in 2022, following the outbreak of the Russo-Ukrainian War, in opposition to Russian troops stationed in Transnistria. Since then, it has existed as an unrecognized separatist movement.
