The Chancellor of the Garman Empire, commonly the Chancellor of Garmany, is the federal head of government of the Garman Empire. The constitution grants the "presidency of the government" to the chancellery, they chair the imperial government and nominate its ministers. They are constitutionally also required to maintain the confidence of the House of Commons, so sit as a member of parliament.
The office is currently vacant.
History
The chancellery is the oldest non-royal political office in Garmany. It was established by the constitution on 18 August 2023.
Powers and Constraints
The chancellor is granted the presidency of the government by the constitution so sits as head of the Government of Garmany. As a result of this, they lead the Imperial Cabinet (executive branch) and nominate its ministers for the monarch's appointment. In addition to this they usually lead the largest party in the legislature. Due to this, the chancellor wields significant legislative and executive powers.
International Role
The chancellor has an important role representing the Garman government at home and abroad.
Deputy
Chancellors may select a vice chancellor to aid them in their duties and to deputise in their absence. Vice chancellors are seen as a deputy head of government in Garmany, so when acting in place of the chancellor they can hold significant powers.
Appointment
The chancellor is appointed by the monarch. Constitutionally, the appointee should be based on who is likely to command the most confidence in the Imperial Parliament, so by constitutional convention they are usually the leader of the party with the largest number of seats in the House of Commons. The chancellor serves officially at the monarch's pleasure.
