The Chancellor of the Exchequer, commonly known just as the Chancellor, is a senior Minister of the Crown in the Government of Bastara and the head of His Majesty's Treasury. They are also a high-ranking member of the Cabinet.

The chancellor is responsible for matters of government spending and treasury affairs.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the chancellor is overseeing the government's fiscal policy. They have the power to set the government's budget - deciding how the government spends its money each fiscal year. They typically do this under the guidance of the prime minister and work alongside the Secretary of State for Finance.

After they have agreed the government budget with the PM and Finance Secretary they have to try and get the House of Commons to approve their budget, officially establishing it as the government budget for that fiscal year.

Appointment

Like other ministers, the Chancellor is appointed by the monarch. The monarch normally appoints based on the nomination of the prime minister. Due to the importance of the office, it is usually one of the first appointments made when a government is formed.
