The First Secretary of State is a position held by a Minister of the Crown in the Government of Bastara. The office indicates seniority over all other secretaries of state in government. It is the thirds most senior government position after the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. The office is sometimes seen as an unofficial deputy head of government.
The office is currently vacant.
History
Like the role of deputy prime minister, the first secretary of state is not one defined in the constitution but is established more by convention. The office was officially established on 9 June 2023.
Responsibilities
The office doesn't tend to bring any additional responsibilities and can be sometimes appointed with another ministerial appointment. However, it can be said that the appointment of the first secretary can free up a minister to deal with additional duties from the prime minister. They can also deputies were possible in the prime minister's absence.
The role of the FSoS is similar to that of the deputy prime minister.
Appointment
The first secretary of state is nominated by the prime minister. Then it is at the discression of the monarch to appoint the officeholder. Like the prime minister, the FSoS serves at the monarch's pleasure.
