A prime ministerial election was held on 19 January 2024 to elect the 6th Prime Minister of Imruland. It was the first voted election after the third amendment of the Constitution of Imruland. Home Minister Ishtiak Mahfuz Abdullah defeated Education Minister and former Prime Minister Safat Zareef Hassan.

Background

Prime Minister Nihal Ahmed resigned on 18 January 2024 on the advice of Governor Showib Ahmmed. The Governor advised him to resign to give the power to an experienced one and to arrange a new election. It was the first voted election after the third amendment of the constitution. There were no political parties in Imruland. No one was allowed to participate in the election from a political party. All had to contest as independent candidates.

Electoral system

The Prime Minister is elected by an indirect election by the members of parliament as per Article 27 of the Constitution of Imruland. Voters cannot be less than 9 and not more than 20. The voters would be selected by the members of the Constitution Drafting Committee.

The final results of the elections were announced by Governor Showib Ahmmed at 6.45pm on 20 January.

Aftermath

Governor Showib Ahmmed and Prime Minister Nihal Ahmed congratulated Ishtiak Mahfuz Abdullah to win the election. Both the winning and losing candidates welcomed the result at first. Losing candidate Safat Zareef Hassan also congratulated Ishtiak. The power was transferred to the elected Prime Minister on 21 January 2024.
