The Princess Islands, officially designated by the government as the Islands of the Princesses of Emeralkia and Elemental, are a set of two islands along the Danube river, claimed by the Federated States of Gapla when Wyatt, Prince of Gaplastovia claimed to find a loophole in the claim text of the original claimant for the smaller island and was given the territory (through discontinuation of claim) from the previous legitimate claimant in another. The islands in question are Princess Emma Island (the larger island), named after Emma, Princess of Emeralkia, and Princess Chelsea Island (the smaller island), named after Chelsea, Princess of Elemental.
The islands, a part of Greater Danubia along with several pockets of land on the Croatia-Serbia border, are be administered by the Dominion of Emeralkia and New Gaplastovia, with Princess Emma Island being administered by Emeralkia and with the capital city of New Gaplastovia only holding administrative buildings on Princess Chelsea Island.
The names of the islands were decided through a friendly poll, in which Emma, Princess of Emeralkia was the victor (thereby having her name on the largest island). The islands were monumental as they served as Gapla's first non-Antarctic territory outside of residential land, with the exception of Mogollon, which was considered ceremonially claimed. The islands and its corresponding competitive name poll were seen as public relations and citizen engagement/recruitment actions by the government. Due to the ambiguity of the citizenship status of Vivian Kim (debated since 2020), who was likely to vote in the poll, the poll was open to non-Gaplan citizens.
History
The Princess Islands were claimed through a different justification for each of the islands, but arising from the same core principle: that the Principality of Ongal excluded islands from its original claim to the Danubian lands (predating Liberland and several other claimants) as it only specified that the right bank of territory on the Danube was to be included.
Princess Emma Island was claimed through an acknowledgement of the discontinuation of the claim by Socaland, a micronation that had claimed the territory symbolically after the error. The Gaplan Government claimed that this meant the land was once again terra nullius, and therefore swiftly claimed Princess Emma Island, which was done after the claim of Princess Chelsea Island.
Princess Chelsea Island was never claimed by a party after the Ongal treaty, and was therefore simply claimed as terra nullius.
Naming poll
A poll was conducted in the Federated States of Gapla, designed to be a friendly and non-serious poll as a public relations competition between the two Gaplan princesses in their own right (Mirabelle, Princess of Phoenix was granted the title for historical reasons).
Emma, Princess of Emeralkia won with 41 out of 76 votes, with Chelsea, Princess of Elemental receiving 35 votes.
