The Secretary of State for Defence, sometimes called the Defence Secretary, is a secretary of state in the Government of Athor with overall responsibility for the Ministry of Defence. They are a member of the Council of Ministers.
Responsibilities
The duties of the defence secretary include:
- Overseeing Strategic Military and Defensive Operations
- Commanding the Armed Forces on Behalf of and With the Confidence of the Monarch
- Overseeing of Defence Intelligence
- Managing Relations With International Partners
- Oversee Defence Policy, Resourcing and Planning
- Communications on Defence
History
The office of defence secretary is one of the first created in the Athori cabinet. The office was established alongside the Ministry of Defence on 21 December 2022.
Appointment
The defence secretary is nominated for office by the Prime Minister and can be nominated from either house of parliament. The Monarch then can formally appoint an MP to office.
