Outcome: maintenance of Princia's current constitutional monarchy with Prince Joshua I as head of state

The 2022 Princian monarchy referendum, also known simply as the referendum due to it being the first and most substantial nationwide referendum held within the Princian Commonwealth, was a referendum held on 19th May 2022 that was called by the 2022 Monarchy Act, proposed and passed by the People's Party & Princian Party of Socialists. The question on the ballot paper read: "Should Princia maintain its current constitutional monarchy or transition to a democratic republic?" The acceptable answers were: "Monarchy" and "Republic." Only the People's Party & Princian Party of Socialists announced their support for a "Republic" vote, while the United Democratic, Metropolitan and Traditionals parties all announced their support for a "Monarchy" vote.

Although de jure the Electoral Legislature is constitutionally incapable of abolishing the monarchy, it was conceded that Prince Joshua would dissolve the monarchy himself if the people of Princia wished it to be so via the result of this referendum. Upon the declaration of the referendum results by the National Unitary Election & Referendum Commission at 16:00 RPST on 19th May 2022: 83 districts voted in favour of the monarchy, while 41 districts voted in favour of a republic – solidifying the historic monarchy's future over the Princian Commonwealth for the foreseeable. A short while following the referendum, in September 2022, Prince Joshua reached an agreement with the People's Party: the continued existence of the monarchy but conversion to an elective one.
