This article is about the Lok Sabha constituency. For the former Vishwamitran special administrative territory, see
Chandril.
Chandrapur (earlier Chandril Lok Sabha constituency) is a constituency represented in the Lok Sabha, the unicameral legislature of Vishwamitra and is one of the 3 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state of Kamrupa, the other two being Dadara and National List. This constituency was established in 2021 prior to the March 2021 general election as a part of the delimitation of the constituencies in the state.
History
Chandril was one of the few constituencies which came into existence following the delimitation which took place in January 2021, two months ahead of the March 2021 general election. During the general election, as none of the parties had filed candidates from the constituency, the election was declared void. Days later, in a bye-election, Matthew Xia of the National People's Congress was victorious from the seat.
In the November 2021 Vishwamitran general election, Arturo Lara of the NPC defeated David Brooke, the General Secretary of the Green Socialist Party in the constituency and was able to win it. However, he resigned as a member in February 2022. Thus, a bye-election was necessitated which took in May that year and independent candidate Rafe Burfield defeated two other independent candidates Liam Alexander and Manggala Alif Prasetia. Burfield was later re-elected from the seat during the 2022 Vishwamitran general election held in November 2022 as a candidate of the National People's Congress.
The NPC has been the most successful party in the constituency having won the seat thrice so far.
