MicroCon is a biennial micronational summit and the largest convention of micronationalist government representatives. Beginning in 2015, MicroCon was created by the government of Molossia as a venue for delegates of micronations around the world "to share their ideas, dreams and worlds with each other."
Each convention is hosted by a different micronation, decided upon by the MicroCon Committee. The first two conventions took place in the United States, while the third took place in Canada. Conventions consist of speeches and presentations, as well as giving the opportunity to socialise, such as exchanging passport stamps and medals, signing diplomatic treaties, creating alliances and giving orders.
Only 6 micronations have attended each MicroCon, the Republic of Molossia, the Kingdom of Ruritania, the Grand Duchy of Westarctica, the United Slabovian Empire, the Republic of West Who and the Ambulatory Free States of Obsidia.
Even though the hosts of MicroCon have the latitude to determine the programmation of MicroCon, each conference have usually followed the same format.
Activities commonly found at each conference are the presentations and speeches, the formal ball and the awards ceremony. Table displays have also been present at each MicroCon. MicroCons will usually conclude the weekend with a sporting activity like bowling.
Potential hosts have to submit an application to the MicroCon Committee. Applications are considered on five factors:
- Completeness of submission
- Creativity and "vision" of proposal
- Uniqueness and attractiveness of hosting geographical location
- Viability of submission
- Style (spelling, grammar, etc.)
MicroCon hosts are formally announced during the preceding MicroCon given them about 2 years to prepare. During that time, they have to periodically inform the MicroCon Committee on their progress.
The first MicroCon was hosted by the Republic of Molossia and was held on 11 April 2015 , in Anaheim in the United States. The conference was attended by 36 people representing 17 delegations. The conference was the shortest, lasting only one day. It was held at two different venues, the presentations happening at the Anaheim Central Library and the ball at the Unitarian Universalist Church. A tour of Hollywood Boulevard was also organized and saw delegates taking pictures on the grand staircase of the Dolby Theatre, where the Academy Awards ceremony is held annually.
The second MicroCon was hosted by the Kingdom of Ruritania and was held from 23 June 2017 to 25 June 2017 , in Tucker, a city located near Atlanta in the United States. The conference was the first to feature a diplomatic reception on the day before the official start of the event. Delegates were invited at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Ruritania for a social gathering. The presentations were held at the Tucker Reid H. Cofer Library and the gala happened at an Italian restaurant.
The third MicroCon was the first one organized outside of the United States. It was hosted by the United Slabovian Empire and was held from 19 July 2019 to 21 July 2019 , in Hamilton, a city located near Toronto in Canada. The conference holds the micronational record for the most attendees at a micronational summit with 113 people participating, representing more than 40 micronations. The event was held at the Courtyard by Mariott.
The fourth MicroCon was hosted by the Grand Duchy of Westarctica and was held from 4 August 2022 to 7 August 2022 , in Las Vegas in the United States. The conference was originally planned to happen in 2021 but was postponed to 2022 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. MicroCon 2022 was awarded to a joint bid with the Kingdom of Shiloh who withdrew from organizing in 2021. The event happened at Sam's Town Casino & Gambling Hall. It featured the first MicroCon Olympics hosted by the Micronational Olympic Federation and the first induction ceremony for the newly established Micronational Hall of Excellence. It was also the first conference to shorten the awards ceremony by requesting micronations to only award their highest award during the gala and give the rest during the resting period between the presentations and the gala.
The fifth MicroCon is to be hosted by the Royal Republic of Ladonia from 30 June 2023 to 2 July 2023 , in Joliet, a city near Chicago in the United States. It will also feature a separate European event co-hosted with the Grand Duchy of Flandrensis from 11 August 2023 to 13 August 2023 in Ypres in Belgium, the first MicroCon outside of North America. Instead of being hosted two years after MicroCon 2022, MicroCon 2023 is hosted as if MicroCon 2021 happened as to not break the biennal cycle set forth by MicroCon 2015.
