The Order of the Adler is the most senior order of chivalry within Laskaridia. It is constituted to monarchs of foreign states, and loyal and distinguished citizens of Laskaridia.

It has a comprehensive structure with 4 ranks. The full regalia of the Order was previously entitled only the the sovereign, but the Order was reformed to have only 4 grades, and in a similar fashion to the Order of the Garter, its regalia could be worn by all its members.[1]

Structure

The Order of the Adler is headed by the Sovereign, who makes appointments to the order and can revise its structure. The sovereigns deputy is the Chancellor of the Order of the Adler, who can not make appointments, but with the assent of the monarch can make appointments. The current interim Chancellor is the Duke of Mayenne, the brother of the King.[2]

Sovereign

The Sovereign of the order is the highest rank. It is always the King of Laskaridia, who presides over the order in his own right. The King has the full power to change parts of the order as well as the regalia.

Knight Companion

This rank is usually granted to civilian and military officials who have merited significant achievements. The rank is allowed to wear the badge, ribbon, medal, and belt of the order. The Knight companion is the most common rank of the order and can be granted to anyone of the sovereign's choosing.

Stranger Knight Companion

Although being a foreign member, some heads of state and royalty allowed membership. The sovereign inducts the stranger knights and they too are allowed to wear the full regalia, though the government

Separate and extra ranks

Some documents detail ranks that are not included in the statutes.[3][4] Some include, Royal Collar. The Chancellor of the Order and the Adler King of Arms are additional ranks, not included in the order's structure but are still ex-officio knights of the order. Before a royal declaration was passed detailing its reforms, the ranks of Grand Cordon, Cordon, Knight and Member existed, which wore the sash and badge of the order.

The belt of the order is worn by all ranks besides the knight, it is a belt worn around the waist adorned with lace and gold text. There is currently no belt produced. The badge of the order is made from metal or cardboard and is worn on the right breast, it is given precedence to all other orders. The collar of the order is worn by all members of the order on certain occasions. It is made out of cardboard and string, most often blue or white. In very formal situations, white or gold ribbons attach to the shoulders. The badge of the order is most commonly worn on the right breast area.

Motto on the badge

The motto on the badge and the garter shown on the collar is inspired by the Order of the Garter. It states "HONE JOIE QUI MAL Y PONSE" which means, in Laskaridian, "Shame to all who thinks ill of it."[5]
