The 2024 Austenasian general election was the eighth general election in the Empire of Austenasia, and took place on 12 February 2024 to elect the Prime Minister of Austenasia. Incumbent Prime Minister Lord William Wilson did not seek re-election.
Background
February 2020 saw the election of Prince Dionisiy as Prime Minister of Austenasia, a premiership that lasted only eleven weeks before his resignation during a political crisis which culminated with the assumption of emergency powers by Emperor Jonathan I. Under the provisions of said emergency powers, the Emperor appointed Lord John Gordon to the premiership on 1 June 2020. Despite Lord Gordon holding strong support both in Parliament and among the population, and his time in office being considered very successful, his lack of a formal election was always in the background. Partly due to this, as well as due to time constraints on his part, Lord Gordon decided to step down after just over one year in office following the return of political stability. He was succeeded in office by Lord William Wilson, who was elected in September 2021.
On 28 November 2020, the Elections Act 2020 was passed, mandating that general elections would from henceforth take place when possible every four years, counting from February 2020 onwards. With the September 2021 election having served as an exception due to Lord Gordon's resignation, the next general election was therefore scheduled for February 2024, the month it would have been held had Prince Dionisiy served out a full four-year term.
In his annual Christmas Day broadcast for 2023, Jonathan I confirmed that the general election would take place on 12 February, giving the required seven weeks of notice. On 15 January, the Emperor officially approved three applicant candidates for the election: Lord John Gordon, Lord Andrew Creed, and Lady Addison O'Halloran. The latter later withdrew from the election, with Jonathan I issuing an Imperial Decree to allow her name to be removed from the ballot, as there had previously been no mechanism to officially withdraw once approved by the Monarch as a candidate. With the entire Austenasian electorate being invited to vote in the general election, a referendum on proposed constitutional amendments was also organised to take place alongside the election.
