Elected Incumbent Majority Leader

Alexandre Olivier[b]
Georgienstine First

The August 2021 Georgienstinian congressional election was held on the 6 August 2021.

No party won a majority, but Georgienstine First won the most seats, suffering losses due to low turnout. The SLP/FLP/LDP joint list also saw losses due to low turnout. The Solidarity Party unexpectedly made major gains due to low turnout among major parties and making inroads with independent voters. The Liberal Party had also made gains. Despite a loss of members following the last congressional election, the party gained moderate Georgienstine First supporters. The Social Democratic Party suffered major losses, losing its sole congressman and merged into Georgienstine First, after the election.

Georgienstine First formed a de jure majority due to the Liberal Party continuing to caucus with them by default. On 7 September, the newly founded Federalist Party (formerly the Liberal party) joined the minority, making the New Progressive Party (formerly the SLP and the FLP) the majority party. On 11 September, following Roy Jackson and Renzo Wessels (though he later rejoined) leaving the party, Georgienstine First formed a majority once again.

Background

The June 2021 Georgienstinian congressional election resulted in Georgienstine First becoming the majority party after the Social Democratic and Liberal parties continued caucusing with them.

On 6 June 2021, the speaker election was inconclusive with Addison Dillon receiving 6 votes to Logan White's 3 and Andrew Perdomo's one, with 6 abstaining. Dillon fell 3 votes short of the 9 needed to win the office.

On 20 June 2021, Logan White was elected speaker receiving 10 votes, with 6 abstaining. During his tenure as speaker, White was considered inactive, not responding to calls for sessions. Unlike his predecessors, White was blamed for the inactivity and not the Majority and Minority caucuses. However, in the final weeks of his tenure, White became more active. As the speaker, White pushed for reforms to the congressional procedure.

Congressperson Addison Dillon left the Socialist Labour Party to create the Farmer-Labour Party, citing that the party had drifted too far to the left. The same day, the Green, Farmers and Local Party merged into the Farmer-Labour Party, giving the party a second seat (Renzo Wessels). Both members switched their caucus affiliation to the Majority Caucus.

Minority Whip Roy Jackson resigned and was replaced by Owen O'Lachtna.

On 22 June 2021, congressperson Addison Dillon was expelled from the Majority Caucus for having gone against the Majority Whip's decision often, having admitted to joining the caucus to "expand her party's base" and having opinions very different from the Majority Caucus's members. The same day, a motion was passed preventing Dillon from rejoining the Minority Caucus. After this, Dillon sat as a non-caucusing congressperson and attempted to get fellow Farmer-Labour congressperson Renzo Wessels to join her, however, he declined, igniting tensions between the two.

On 29 June 2021, Renzo Wessels rejoined the Minority Caucus. The same day, a motion was passed in the Minority Caucus allowing Dillon to rejoin.

On 6 July 2021, congressperson Swan Dunkerque left the Socialist Labour Party to create the Solidarity Party, citing a change in political beliefs.

On 4 August 2021, congressperson Sean Dunkerque left the Solidarity Party to sit as an independent, citing a change of beliefs and his presidential campaign.

Electoral system and organization

The National Congress is composed of 16 seats elected by proportional representation in a single nationwide constituency, with a legal threshold of 1 full seat (6.25%), and residuals assigned by the D’Hondt method.

Campaign

The election was compared to the 2021 Georgia runoff elections as it was taking place after a presidential election to decide the control of the legislature.

The Socialist Labour Party released two posters.

On 6 August 2021, president Raphaël Olivier addressed the nation urging citizens to vote and endorsed Georgienstine First. Sullivan Matthews was removed from the Georgienstine First congressional list for racist and controversial comments on individuals on the autism spectrum. Matthews is now in the Socialist Labour Party, with the party having released a statement saying that if Matthews makes similar comments in the future, his membership will be terminated.
