The Sovereign Military Order of the Saint Clément and of Esse (Essian: Imperis Wallon Orden a la Sao Clemens a la Essia), also known as the Sovereign Military Order of Esse, the SMO Esse, or the Essian Order, is an organization, society, order, and self-proclaimed non-territorial state which considers itself the backbone of the Essian people, its culture and traditions, and its successor states. The Order is most well-known as the group responsible for the endowment of the Essian Commonwealth, the first and most significant state of the Essian people. As the constructionists of the Essian core, the Order is a cornerstone in the history of Esse, its predecessors and successors, and subsequent leaders.
The Military Order was revitalized by Essian Monarch Lord Henry, who became Lord Protector Clément I of the Essian Order upon it's restructuring in July 2017. The Military Order is recognized by the Essian Commonwealth and is in addition a protected state of the Commonwealth, despite being non-territorial.
History
In late May 2015, in the wake of a string of political incidents in the Federated States of America, Henry Clément assembled a group with two friends - neither of whom were at any point in the Federated States - to create a new micronation once the Federated States inevitably collapsed. The two friends were, however, historically notable for founding the "USSR" that initiated the first and only war the Federated States ever participated in.
There were several drafts for the name, symbolism, etc. for the nation, at least one of which included the name St.David. Many of the land claim proposals came from Proposition 1, a long-debated proposal in the Federated States to significantly alter the size of their massively unenforceable land claim. In the end, however, nothing from said proposal was used for the new nation, and the St.David proposal was scrapped. The name chosen was "Esse," a translation of a German word meaning "hearth."
The Federated States proceeded to collapse on 1 June 2015, and it was on this exact day that the Republic of Esse - shortly thereafter renamed to the Essian Commonwealth - was declared to be a state through the Instrument of Government.
The Sovereign Military Order, having done its job, remained largely unused from that point on, however was never officially dissolved ans was consistently mentioned in articles and historical writings to still, in fact, exist as its own sovereign entity. The specifics of its government, structure, and ongoing purpose weren't worked out for over two years of dormancy and inactivity on the part of the Order.
From this technicality, the Sovereign Military Order is the longest-surviving Clementine nation, as well as the longest-consecutive lasting.
In July 2017, now-Lord Henry announced intentions to revitalize the inactive Order. This included defining offices: Lord Protector, Most Ordane Prince, Crown Chancellor, and beginning procedures to define what makes any one person a "subject" or "citizen" of the Sovereign Military Order. At this point, it was declared that the Sovereign Military Order would become the first and to date only organization to devote itself to solely using the Essian language.
