The 1st General Election of Phillip was held on 13 January 2023 to elect the President and seven seats in the National Assembly. The election was called by then-acting President Jaxson Renny. It was originally scheduled for the 11th of January but was delayed by Renny to the 12th because of personal conflicts. 76% of Phillip's population voted, most of which were under the age of 18. Four Assembly candidates ran uncontested, allowing them to claim six out of the seven seats in the Assembly without having to compete.

Voting for candidates started on the 12th of January and ended on the 13th. After the ballots were closed, all winners were automatically appointed to their positions.

Jaxson Renny of the Butter Butta Bentley Party won the election for President with slightly less than the majority of the vote, continuing his term as acting President. His party won a majority in the National Assembly with four out of the seven seats, three of which were held by a single person.

Campaigns

Presidential election

The expectation for this election was that Jaxson Renny and his party would win control of the government easily. The Butter Butta Bentley Party is the largest party in Phillip, they put out a well-known and competent candidate, and they had a platform supported by the majority of Phillip's voters. Renny's platform was based off wanting to create a new "national identity" for Phillip and guide the country through its first months. Another candidate running under his party was Reed Von, who is currently serving as the Minister of Fish & Wildlife. He was extremely popular with Phillip's younger population. Von's platform was to resurrect feudal society and make Phillip into a prosperous nation.[1]

Owen Itzen of the Ugandan-Ngombe QAnon Social Workers Coalition was the third most popular candidate to run for President. His campaign toted that he would "allow massive corporations to monopolize industries".[2]

Nick Waro of the Radical Party and Riley Cook of the Cork Party also ran for President, but neither were expected to receive many votes.

National Assembly

At the time of this election, there were seven seats in Phillip's National Assembly, one for each of the districts and one that encompassed all the territories. Before the election even began, five seats in the Assembly had already been called. This is because four candidates were running uncontested due to the fact that no one else in their districts had any interest in running. These five seats were taken by Madison Marcos (UNQSWC) of Calabaza, Vice President Luke Fitzgibbins (BBB) of Lukous, Cooper Norfolk (UNQSWC) of Origen, and Iyan Seeker (BBB) of Tarkis and Orue.

Citizens were able to vote for the seats of the territories and Port Phillip. Iyan Seeker, hoping to win a third seat in the Assembly, started his campaign for representative of the territories. In response to his campaign, Owen Itzen, Riley Cook (CP) and Reed Von announced their candidacy in an attempt to prevent him from having more power. Von was not expected to win because he was focusing more on his Presidential campaign, but Itzen had a decent shot at winning, as many members of Seeker's own party were not planning on voting for him. Even though Cook's party was extremely unpopular, he stood a good chance against Seeker as well. Cook, Itzen, and Von started their campaigns for Port Phillip's seat as well.

Controversy

Political comic by Luke Fitzgibbins regarding the Seeker Controversy

During this election, Iyan Seeker was able to win three seats in the National Assembly. He won two of those seats by default and then won the Assembly seat for the Territories. He then had full control over three out of the seven seats. Many politicians in Phillip, specifically Vice President Luke Fitzgibbins, raised concerns over the power that Seeker had over the Assembly.

On 17 February 2023, he was able to pass a law that limited the number of seats one person could have in the National Assembly.[3] Seeker was required to forfeit one of his seats, meaning that he currently only has two.
