Ribbon of the Order of Dagon

The Order of Dagon (Portuguese: Ordem de Dagon) was a national and dynastic order of knighthood of the Kingdom of Ebenthal. It was the third higher Ebenthali honor, being awarded on the ground of civil merit at the monarch's pleasure. The order was disestablished in 20 August 2021.

It was established in 2020 by King Arthur II as a dynastic order attached to the national pantheon of orders and awards. It was created as a homage to the cosmic horror writter H.P. Lovecraft, being named after the fictitious Esoteric Order of Dagon, a magical order that worship a deity creature called Dagon from the The Shadow over Innsmouth tale. The order's motto Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn, written in a forsaken language at the Necronomicon, translates to "At his house in R'lyeh, Cthulhu, dead awaits dreaming".

The micronational Ebenthali order isn't related to the 1981 American-based Esoteric Order of Dagon.

Origin

The Order of Dagon was established in 26 January 2020 by King Arthur II of Ebenthal through a royal decree as a dynastic order, this means, an order conferred firstly by the House of Bruyn, attached to the national pantheon of orders and awards. The name of the order is a deviation of the Esoteric Order of Dagon, a rather fictional religious order present in some of the scripts by the American cosmic horror writter Howard Philips Lovecraft, notoriously at the The Shadow over Innsmouth tale; the order's name proper refers to the Sumerian sea deity called Dagon. The creation of this order was one of Arthur II's personal desires as huge fan of Lovecraft's work, but there was no clear intention on the order's role. Under the State Council advise, it was decided the order would award civil merit at the monarch's will.

Grades and badges

The Order of Dagon had one sole grade, that of Knight, and it's female equivalent, Dame. Both use the same post-nominal letters of OED standing for the Portuguese Ordem Esotérica de Dagon (English: Esoteric Order of Dagon). Knights and Dames of the order wears the order's badge on a sash on the right shoulder, and the ensign of the order in gold on the left chest.

Precedence and privileges

Members of this order were assigned positions in the order of precedence, ranking above all others members of equal rankings of whichever orders except for the higher Order of the Swiss Prince and Order of the Silver Cat. Consorts, childs and childs-in-law also feature on the order of precedence; relatives of members, however, are not assigned any special precedence. Generally, individuals can derive precedence from their parents or consorts as long as the recipient lives.

All members ot the order were entitled to the prefixes of "Sir" and "Ma'am". When an individual is entitled to use multiple post-nominal letters, the ones of the order (OED) takes precedence according to the ranking of orders. All recipients may encircle their arms with the circlet of the order.

Controversies

The order has sometimes being shunned mainly due to it's homage to H.P. Lovecraft who, despite being a literary genius of the horror genre was also extremelly racist, but also due to its association to a heathen deity, what makes the order being associated with the evil. Members of the 1981 American-based Esoteric Order of Dagon - which believed Lovecraft to have been a prophet and his tales to be prophecies - related to micronationalism, when presented to the order by King Arthur himself in a facebook group, replied the micronational order isn't related to them in any kind and it is rather a joke to their ranks and a heresy to their beliefs. Some of members praised the micronational order as good propaganda for the actual order.
