Ribbon of the Order

The Order of the Blue Blood (Portuguese: Ordem do Sangue Azul) is national and dynastic order of the Kingdom of Ebenthal, granted at the monarch's pleasure exclusivelly to royalty and mediatized nobles, usually in recognition of a national contribution, for public service, or for personal service to the sovereign. It was first established in 2016 by King Arthur I of Roschfallen. Nonetheless, in 2020 the sovereignity over the order was transferred to the person of the King of Ebenthal as a dynastic order of the House of Bruyn incorporated to the national pantheon of orders and awards. As a house order, the entire administration of the order lies with the person of the monarch, not with the crown, and thus appointments are at the sovereign's sole discretion. Membership of the order is unlimited and supernumerary.

History

The Roschfallenian order

The Order of the Blue Blood was founded on 26 January 2016 by King Arthur I of Roschfallen as national order, loosely based in the Order of the Garter, with the purpose to award royalty. The term "Sangue Azul" from his name comes from the old Visighotic tradition of saying that the Christian royals had blue blood in contrast to the average red blood of the Moors in the Iberian peninsula. It was popularized in countries that emerged from the old Visigothic Kingdom (namely Portugal and Spain), as well as in its former colonies, and was adapted to the English language in 1811 in the Annual Register and started to be used from 1834 to categorize people of royal descent. At the time of its creation in Roschfallen, the order was the third highest honor in the realm, after the Order of the Golden Triumph and the Order of Vissen. Nevertheless, the order soon became the most prestigious in the country due to its exclusivity and its recipients.

The Ebenthali order

After the July 2019 coup, Roschfallen entered an increasing state of inactivity which culminated in the abdication of King Arthur I, who was succeeded by his former High Inquisitor as Ferdinand I. In October 2020 the former King of Roschfallen, now occupying the throne of Ebenthal as Arthur II, sought his successor on the throne of Roschfallen in order to negotiate with him sovereignty over the Order of Blue Bloods, who wanted to settle in Ebenthal. With the order virtually dormant, the Roschfallenian monarch agreed and on 4 December of that year a treaty was signed whereby the Roschfallenian State surrendered the order to the person of the Ebenthali monarch, not to the Ebenthali state. Thus, the order became a dynastic order, rather than a national order. The transfer of sovereignty incurred no damages to members and recipients of the order previously awarded by the King of Roschfallen, with rare exceptions in cases specially reviewed by the King of Ebenthal.

Composition

Members

Membership in the order is unlimited and exclusively for royalty. It includes the Monarch and the Prince of Altenburg respectively as Sovereign and Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master. The Monarch alone can grant membership at his own pleasure, meaning it has no requirements for a person to be inducted a member of the order, although as a national order, membership is regularly granted at the Prime Minister's indication. Monarchs are known as Sovereign of Order of the Blue Blood and the Prince of Altenburg is known as Royal Knight Compainion of the Order of the Blue Blood. Members of the order are divided between "Kingdom Knights/Dames" and "Stranger Knights/Dames".

Grades

The King of Ebenthal is the Sovereign and Grand Master of the order. All deeds granting decorations of the Order must bear the signature of the Sovereign and Grand Master. The Deputy Grand Master is empowered to act on behalf of and in place of the monarch if necessary and with the express approval of the monarch; if the monarch is unable to give his consent, it is up to the Head of the House of Bruyn to sanction the acts of the Deputy Grand Master. Members of the order are granted a certificate and are eligible to require a personal coat of arms with the insignia of the Order. Despite being a single-graded order, there is a division of registration between Kingdom Knights and Dames, who are citizens of Ebenthal appointed to be members of the order, including supernumerary members of the Royal Family, and Stranger Knights and Dames, foreigners appointed as members of the order. There is, however, no difference in precedence between these classifications.

Precedence and privileges

Members of this order are assigned positions in the order of precedence, ranking above all others members of equal rankings of whichever orders. Consorts, children and children-in-law also feature on the order of precedence; other relatives of members, however, are not assigned any special precedence. Generally, individuals can derive precedence from their parents or consorts as long as the recipient lives.

All members ot the order are entitled to the prefixes "Sir" for males and "Ma'am" for females. When an individual is entitled to use multiple post-nominal letters, the ones of the order (OBB), standing for Order of the Blue Blood takes precedence. All recipients may encircle their arms with the circlet of the order.
