In Vishwamitra, the regent (Hindi: राज-प्रतिनिधि) is a person who exercises the official functions of the monarch of Vishwamitra when the monarch is incapable of functioning or during a period of interregnum.

Appointment

Federal throne

According to the Monarchy Establishment Document signed on 4 June 2020, it was declared that if the monarch is to leave the nation or is unable to perform their duties for whatever reason, they may or may not appoint any regent or council of regency. The monarch can also appoint a regent to act on their behalf for various issues related to the nation.

Following the established of the monarchy on 8 June 2020, Tanishkaa Patranabish was named as the first Rashtradhyaksh by the outgoing council of state. However, soon after ascending to the throne, she named the Rajpramukh of Purvanchal, Varuna Sriraya to act as the deputy monarch and perform his duties accordingly as the regent ad-interim and to represent her on all national and global platforms. However, following her abdication on 29 July, Varuna Sriraya ascended to the throne as the second monarch of the nation.

On account of the absence of the Rashtradhyaksh, the Uparashtradhyaksh is the first in the line of succession to the throne and shall discharge their duties as the acting Rashtradhyaksh until the return or resumption of throne by the holder. The Rashtradhyaksh may also appoint their deputy as the regent for a short period of time when they deem necessary. If there is an absence of both the Rashtradhyaksh and Uparashtradhyaksh, then the Chairman of the Conference of Rulers, acting as the senior-most of the other provincial monarchs (Rajpramukhs) shall assume the throne as the Regent for a period as deemed necessary.

Provincial thrones

Article 25(1) of the Constitution of Vishwamitra specifies:

The Rashtradhyaksh shall not exercise their functions as Ruler of their State except those of Head of the royal house and Soverign of the orders.

Article 28(5) of the constitution further adds:

In accordance with Clause 1 of Article 25, the ruler appointed as Rashtradhyaksh shall be required to appoint a regent in their place as the ruler of their state beginning the day of accession to the throne till the completion of their reign as the Ruler of the Nation.

The provisions of the constitution do not allow a simultaneous reign as both the Rashtradhyaksh (federal monarch) of Vishwamitra and as monarch of the Rashtradhyaksh's native state (deemed absent on the states' throne). As a result of which, following the accession of a state ruler as the federal ruler, they appoint a regent in their place, usually the heir to the throne. The state of Purvanchal whose Rajpramukh serves as the federal ruler appointed his cousin Prince Abhiraj as the regent until being replaced by Crown Princess Princess Sarala on 6 February 2021 who has been the regent since then.
