A general election was completed which was held in Vishwamitra on 7 October 2023 to elect all 20 seats of the Lok Sabha.

Background

According to the Constitution of Vishwamitra, the Lok Sabha shall stand dissolved no later than every one year from the first sitting of Parliament. The previous election, the 2022 general election resulted in the victory of the ruling National People's Congress party and the emergence of the Vishwamitran National Party as the chief opposition party.

The election was initially scheduled to be held in November 2023, but were preponed by a month to fit the festive season beginning October-end. On 6 September 2023, the Rashtradhyaksh granted assent to the Parliamentary (Statute Law Reform) Act, 2023 which created provisions for the renaming of the parliamentary constituencies, reservation one constituency in each state for residential citizens and abolition of the territorial seat for Chandrabans. Days prior to the election, two privy councilors Jan-Olav Spiekermann and Matthew T. resigned to join politics.

The same day, the Rashtradhyaksh acted on the advice of the council of ministers and approved the dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha.

Electoral system

All 20 elected MPs are elected from single-member constituencies using first-past-the-post voting. Voters must be full Vishwamitran citizens, an ordinary resident of the polling area of the constituency and registered to vote (name included in the electoral rolls), possess a valid citizens ID code issued by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration or an equivalent.
