Fraternitas, officially the Territory of Fraternitas, is a New Virginian territory in the Canton of Roanoke. Fraternitas borders both the U.S. state of Kentucky and the New Richmonder Town of Augusta.

Prior to 11 February 2020, Augusta was an Austenasian Town, having been annexed from the USA as a borough of New Richmond named North New South Josephsburg on 6 September 2018 before becoming its own town independent from New Richmond as Augusta on 12 June 2019. Upon the Secession of the Commonwealth of New Virginia in February 2020, although most of Augusta became independent of Austenasia, an uninhabited part of the town was retained by Austenasia and established as the Territory of Fraternitas at the suggestion of Lady Admiral Vera Hewitt, who served as its Governor.

On 1 November 2021, Fraternitas was ceded to New Virginia by Austenasia. Earlier in the year, New Virginia had experienced the secession of all its original land claims, leaving the Commonwealth with no territory initially from the Austenasian duchy which had originally become independent. As a gesture of friendship, Fraternitas was ceded to New Virginia to provide the Commonwealth with such land and establish a physical link of continuity.

Etymology

The name Fraternitas is derived from the Latin noun frāternitās meaning "brotherhood". The territory received its name to reflect the friendship between New Virginia and Austenasia.

History

Before 2018, the area was under the jurisdiction of the United States of America. On 6 September, the area was annexed as the Borough of North New Saint Josephsburg, within New Richmond City, Austenasia.[1] Territorial reforms on 12 June 2019 split the borough from New Richmond to form the town of Augusta, represented by Lord Riley Hewitt, Baron of Augusta.[2]

During the 2020 Secession of New Virginia, an uninhabited stretch of Augusta was retained by Austenasia as the Territory of Fraternitas, governed by Lady Admiral Vera Hewitt, Duchess of New Royton.[3]

In June 2021, rising anti-Austenasian sentiment led Dame Sophia Albina, leader of the New Virginian Fellowship for Nordalian Unity, proposing the severance of ties with Austenasia, alongside the annexation of Campo Del Sol and Fraternitas. Prime Minister Sir Simon White offered a more moderate approach, seeking a diplomatic resolution without overlapping claims on Fraternitas.[4][5]

Scheduled diplomatic talks were interrupted by the July Revolution, which saw an end to the alliance between New Virginia and Austenasia.

After a return to political stability in New Virginia, Jonathan I, Emperor of Austenasia passed an imperial decree in November ceding Fraternitas to New Virginia as a gift to cement a friendly and co-operative relationship.[6] New Virginia would officially annex Fraternitas on 19 April 2022.
